Camp Ida, nestled in
the piney woods of East Texas started in 1970 with the inheritance of 35
acres from Ms. Ida Hamilton Donnely. Ms. Ida left the Redwater Church of
Christ as trustees of the land in Maud, TX with the stipulation that the
trustees build a retirement home, a childrenТs home, or a childrenТs camp
on the property. The eldership chose to build a childrenТs camp giving
campers the opportunity to learn more about GodТs word while becoming
acquainted with others of like mind. The first camp session was held in
August of 1976.
Ten cabins house over
one-hundred campers during their stay. These cabins have been repaired
over the years and more improvements are in the works. New water heaters
were installed last year in the two bath houses provided for the campers
and counselors. A licensed nurse cares for the camperТs medical needs in
the Mike Wages nurseТs cabin. The directors of the four sessions now
offered spend their week in the directorТs cabin located behind the
nurseТs station. Two open air pavilions allow the campers to enjoy GodТs
creation as they learn more about his word. And the Jeff Bradford mess
hall, dedicated to Brother Jeff Bradford in 2002 gives the campers an area
to enjoy the meals provided by hardworking brethren in the kitchen.
Snacks are made available each day in the Country Store.
Camp Ida also provides the campers with the
opportunity to enjoy recreational activities with their new found
friends. The camp has a baseball field and equipment for softball and
baseball. The campers can also enjoy playing volleyball with their
friends on the volleyball court. Some campers choose to shoot a few hoops
to enjoy their free time, and others enjoy a friendly game of ping pong.
Horseshoes and washer throw are also available for those who enjoy a more
relaxed kind of entertainment. Last but not least the newly renovated
swimming pool provides a bit of refreshment from the hot sun.
Each year
faithful brethren strive to teach young people more about God's word.
Classes, devotionals, and evening worship services help bring these young
people closer to God. We hope to see you soon at Camp Ida where you
will make memories and friends that will last a lifetime.
